Kitchen Re-decorating with Thrift Store Finds

One morning a few months back as I sat in my kitchen, I suddenly realized the busiest and most used room in my home was stuck in 2004. I had wine bottles and grapes adorning the top of my kitchen cabinets since, well – 2004! It was time for a little bit of a kitchen face-lift. Oh how I would love to put in new counter tops and cabinets, etc. However, this really isn't 100% necessary. Changing a little bit of decor and some fresh paint should do the trick!

So where to start? THE THRIFT STORES!

Hey, annual trips to Walt Disney World aren’t free and sacrifices must be made! Before I even left he house I knew I wanted some pretty plates to put on top of my cabinets. At the first thrift store, this adorable pitcher JUMPED out to me. Looks like I had my starting point!

Next we headed over to the dishes and just tried to find the most colorful plates I could find. After Mr. Incredible, my son, and I all had our arms full of items  (WHY didn’t we grab a cart?!), we decided on a color pallet that somewhat complimented the pitcher. I realize I do not have a degree in interior decorating, nor do I pretend to know what I am doing, I just saw things that spoke to me and they became mine. Perhaps this will all look hideous and my dear friends and family will have to keep it to themselves that my kitchen is a hot mess. I’m happy so that’s all that matters, right?  Here are our awesome treasures. Total spent on the items below was less than $30. SCORE!

Once we got home, Mr. Incredible was pretty eager to get rid of the dusty wine bottles and grapes – I didn’t even get a before picture taken before it was all down. In place of a before picture, let me try to paint the scene for you.  Think dusty wine bottles on top of cabinets. Think dusty grape vines . . . WOW this is like a fancy guided meditation – with dust. This is your Zen moment of the day – you are welcome! (And… I should really dust more often.)

What's a decor re-do without a coat of paint? After much talk about the 50 elevendy billion shades of  grey, we decided on a lighter grey with just a touch of blue to it.

Next I needed wall hangings, new canisters, a new butter dish, and I knew I wanted a big clock - I love clocks. I also needed new patio curtains as mine were brown. That wouldn't work. We searched high and low and kept checking back at the thrift stores with no success. Time to visit the store! Even this took some time to find exactly what I wanted. BUT my patience paid off with these gems from Hobby Lobby.

Finding patio curtains I like was so hard! I wanted red, but none of the reds seemed quite right. I ended up settling on this gray set of panels from Kohl's. I really didn't think they would work, but I love them.

I also found my big, red giant clock at Kohl's. If I had found red curtains, I couldn't have a red clock. Everything happens for a reason, right?

I stumbled upon the canisters and butter dish at Shopko. and the prices were amazing - 60% off!

They had so much to choose from! I settled on red and blue canisters and a green butter dish.

Time to put it all together!

The look is a bit eclectic, but hey - that's me in a nutshell. And, it all started with a thrift store pitcher I purchased for $3.99! What is your most favorite thrift store find?

This post is not sponsored in any way. Companies are named in case you want any of these awesome items for your own homes. Enjoy!

  1. I haven't really shopped at thrift stores. We have a few here but there's a really great like new "used" furniture store that I like to browse for artwork. I'm a HUGE fan of art and have a few (some even pretty expensive) pieces in my home. I think you did great!

  3. Wow! You did a great job in styling your kitchen. I go to thrift shops for something here or there, but never thought to shop it specifically for a room's decor. I'm going to have to give this a lot of consideration. I do absolutely shop the sales at Kohl's!

  9. I love how the plates match but also are different styles and makes. It's unique! Before I bring anything into my apartment, I need to clean it out. I hate having so much clutter; so I never redecorate until I get rid of the old.
