What to Eat on Paleo - Ideas to Jump-Start Your Lifestyle Change

Chicken Shish Kabob
Many of you know when I am NOT visiting Walt Disney World, I eat a Paleo / Primal diet lifestyle. I am shocked when I mention what I had for dinner of breakfast the night before people say, 'Oh wow, that's paleo?'. Paleo eating is real food. Its not processed or garbage or 'diet' food. In fact, if you want to eat this way it will cost you nothing more than the food you are going to eat. And you need to eat anyhow to live - why not choose high quality food with high levels of nutrition?

For breakfast, I don't make anything fancy unless it is the weekend. One of my favorites to whip up on a weekend I have off is my delicious Paleo Pancakes, or even a vegetable omelet. During the week my breakfast is less photogenic, but still gives me enough energy and nutrition to make it to lunch. I usually will grab a hard boiled egg and an apple or almonds and some strawberries. If I have a bit more time I will make myself a smoothie with unsweetened coconut milk and frozen fruit. Nothing crazy, but something easy and quick!

Lunches are going to bore you. Every day for lunch I have the previous night's leftovers. I don't mind at all! If I am making dinner (which we do every night), it is no extra work to make enough for Mr. Incredible and I to take for the next day. It saves us time and money and is certainly better than anything I can run out and grab.

On to dinner! This is the highlight reel of my Paleo life. We make some epic dinners, let me tell you! Full of nutrition and colorful veggies - anyone else getting hungry? Here are some of my favorite dishes. Some are my own and some are links to other sites. I have personally made and loved each of these dishes. Enjoy!

Primal Pizza

Chicken Shish Kabobs

Chick-fil-A Nuggets served with your favorite vegetable.

Primal Pizza (check out my homemade sausage recipe)

Paleo Gnocchi

Spinach Cilantro Meatballs

Chicken Breasts served with your favorite vegetable.

Grilled Steak with Asparagus

So there ya have it. Seven meal plans for a week of Paleo. Do you see anything disgusting here? Nope - me neither! No fat-free taste-free cardboard for me, either.

On to snacks. I don't feel I snack very much when I give my body what it needs, but every once in a while you need a little something. Here are some of my favorite snacks.

Strawberry Creamsicle

Seeds and nuts (not peanuts)

Strawberry Creamsicles

Dark Chocolate Cookies

High quality beef jerky, beef sticks, or lunch meat (check the ingredients)

Fruits and veggies

Caveman Bars

Olives and pickles

Did anything surprise you? What did you see here that you didn't realize you could eat and still maintain a healthy diet!

  1. It sure did surprise me. When you first told me about the Paleo diet I was shocked to find out that I wouldn't have to change much. I am going to be trying some of your recipes because it would be good to go back to the way we were supposed to be eating.

  2. I have never tried to eat paleo, but I think I generally lean that way. I try to eat clean, and that is the most important thing to me.

    1. You are right, Heather. That is a BIG part of it! You are already doing great just by avoiding the garbage out there that is not really even food.

  3. I don't stick to a certain diet - I just eat what I like, mostly which consists of junk food. This is great for people looking to start the paleo diet :) Super helpful.

    1. Wouldn't that be nice? Everyone's body is different and mine reacts to certain foods like sugar by getting nice and chubby. I would much rather ditch the junk.

  4. Yes, that's amazing and relatively easy! I am so weak when it comes to sugar, though. It's a huge issue for me.

    1. Sugar is addictive that is why it is so hard to break!

  5. Paleo is not really an option for me as I'm vegan. However I totally understand when you talk about misconceptions. Pretty sure people think I eat lettuce all day, when they see me eat burrito's, pancakes, ice cream, and a ton of delicious foods they are shocked!

  7. Thanks for this! I have Celiac Disease and am lactose intolerant so I feel like a majority of the food is Paleo anyways, but it is always nice to get some more ideas :-)

  8. I find I eat paleo a lot. The only two things I have trouble giving up or finding replacements for is bread....oh delicious bread....and pasta.

    1. I've been doing this almost 2 years now and I no longer miss bread or pasta. Once you are used to doing without you are good!

  9. I actually love the paleo diet except for the lack of pasta. LOL. I assume that would go away after a while ;)

  13. I do so well on the Paleo diet. I should go back to it. Just hard when no one else in my family will eat it. Maybe I should start with the dessert section first. ;)

  17. I like the idea of paleo, but I need my legumes! I haven't had fast food in ages, but I have food carts just outside my door that serve REAL food so I'm cool with that.

  18. That creamsicle looks delicious! I honestly don't know much about paleo, so I appreciate the clarification.
